Perhaps, but it would add on a little more damage if you meet the bow requirements

All the damage which is worth anything comes from armour-ignoring splinter.

I like to have one for when I'm not with a human monk that I trust? Also, considering it heals for 150 and deals 150 damage for 5 energy, it really isn't a bad deal at all efficiency-wise.

15 energy if you used triple shot. If you didn't, it takes about 9 seconds to cast nightmare weapon and fire off 3 attacks. Time is just as valuable as energy.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, it looks cool, the damage just isn't that devastating in PvE, and the healing is kinda slow and inefficient. I've played around with dual shot + distracting shot with it in PvP, and it's a mildly entertaining way to kill people in there, but hardly your best option.

I use [skill]nightmare weapon[/skill] not so much as a self heal (although it certainly doesn't hurt) but more as a means of finishing off that one last warrior that didn't die with the rest of it's group. It's also a good skill to use when you're figuring out what your next move should be. Wack it on, start hitting something, it's a filler skill. 53 dmg per standard hit, times 3 hits for 5 energy isn't bad at all. A ranger may be able to get 53 dmg vs a high armour target if he was to spam attack skills but it's not likely.

If there's a group you use [skill]splinter weapon[/skill] and [skill]barrage[/skill] on them. If it's a single target you use [skill]nightmare weapon[/skill] and just hit them with standard attacks as well as any other skill you wanna throw at them like [skill]wielder's strike[/skill] maybe (note that this skill is slightly different than this description).

It's also useful against those pesky Defenders in Slavers Exile who like to RoF and Spirit Bond everything.

So, when the mob is down to 1 opponent, I should just give up on doing damage? Nightmare is a pretty good skill that goes well with this build. Not every build, but it definitely holds weight against most other skills.
Also, splinter + Volley or Splinter+Barrage also gets you the heal if you need it quicker, not just triple, if you need the heal.

I guess I like having what I fondly call my "oh shit" button.
